Seeing the Holiday Garden Railway at night has become a favorite Christmas tradition for our family. It’s always fun to see which trains are out on the tracks and enjoy the nods to Philadelphia and the surrounding area.
Plus, who doesn’t love trains??

The Morris Arboretum Holiday Garden Railway: What to Know Before You Go
Dates and Times
For 2025, the Holiday Garden Railway runs from November 22nd until December 30th.
However, there are only a few dates you can see it at night: November 29th & 30th, and December 6, 7, 11, 12, 13, 14, 18, 19, 20, and 21st. During those evening dates, the trains run from 4:30 pm until 8 pm. However, the last entry is 7 pm.
Admission
If you’re visiting during the day, the Holiday Garden Railway is included with regular garden admission.
However, to see it at night requires a separate ticket. The prices range from $10 – $22, depending on age and member status. Children under 3 are FREE. Don’t forget to reserve your spot in advance.
Dress Warmly
The Holiday Garden Railway display is entirely outside, so you are exposed to the elements. Make sure to dress appropriately for the weather. Plan on being outside for about 45-60 minutes. (We always bring hand warmers to make the visit more comfortable.)
What You Will See at Morris Arboretum’s Holiday Garden Railway
Holiday Train Display
The main draw to visit the Holiday Garden Railway at night is the train display itself!
Thousands of lights adorn the tree and the track of the enormous train display. In total, there is a third of a mile of track that features seven loops and tunnels. There are fifteen different rail lines and nine bridges (one you can walk under), all with Christmas-themed cars riding the tracks.
I personally love buildings made from natural materials. They are miniature versions of popular Philadelphia structures, like City Hall, the Betsy Ross House, and the Art Museum. They are all decorated for Christmas with garland and wreaths.
It’s so fun walking around looking at all of the details that go into the massive display!
Lighted Tunnel & Trees
The Garden Railway is a short walk from the main entrance. Although they don’t light up the entire arboretum like Longwood Gardens (but maybe one day they will!), this short walk is decorated with lighted trees and a new 60-foot lighted tunnel!
‘Out On A Limb’
Although the majority of the garden is closed for the nighttime experience of the Holiday Garden Railway, the Morris Arboretum keeps the “Out On a Limb” exhibit open for the evening.
It’s fun for kids to roll and climb around on the nets and visit the large robin’s nest before or after seeing the holiday train display.
Visitor Tip: If you go out on the nets, make sure your loose items are secured in your pockets or with another member of your party.
Welcome Center and Shop
Before you head back to the car, don’t forget to stop inside the Welcome Center. It’s small, but they have some great products for sale that would make excellent Christmas gifts!
Visiting During the Day
As mentioned above, the Holiday Garden Railway is open during the day and is included with regular daytime admission. Although they don’t stand out like to do against the night sky, the lights are turned on, so you can still enjoy the beautiful display.

There are so many incredible ways to celebrate the Christmas season near Philadelphia. Between the many light displays and the fun activities in the city, plus all of the fun nearby in Montgomery and Bucks Counties, there aren’t enough days to get it all in. But it’s fun trying!
